Canada’s population has grown by 1.7 million between 2011 and 2016, making it the fastest growing country among all G7 nations.

Two-thirds of this growth has been attributed to immigration, a phenomenon that Statistics Canada predicts will continue into the future.

Western Canada has experienced a large boom, with Alberta’s population growing by 11.6% in the past 5 years. Calgary, now considered the fastest growing metropolitan area, has also experienced a stunning growth rate of 14.6%.

Laurent Martel of Statistics Canada explains that this is the first time since Confederation that the Prairie provinces have all demonstrated the highest national rates of growth.
