According to a report released by the Canadian Foundation For Healthcare Improvement, a total of 28 Ontario hospitals have either already adopted 24/7 visiting hours or are considering doing so.

Kingston General Hospital was one of the first to adopt the policy, followed by Humber River Hospital in Toronto, the Ottawa Hospital, and Hamilton Health Sciences.

Mary Jane McNally, chief patient experience officer at the William Osler Health System says: “We know that patients want their families to be engaged. We know that when there is really good communication with patient, family and care providers that there are better outcomes.”

A few concerns regarding the adoption of extended visiting hours include quality of rest for patients, space limitations for visitors in the room, and potential interference with staff at work.
